Big Changes… Plus A Day With Amy PRO!

Is it really August? How is that even possible? {Does time pass as quickly for you as it does for me?}
Back to school will be here in a few short weeks and from there the holidays will fall like dominoes.

The days are already getting shorter and as a lifetime Alaskan, I’m conditioned to start thinking about winter just about the time the rest of the country’s summer starts to peak. It’s a little odd, but I’m used to it. I think it’s a survival thing. When we lived in North Pole, we spent the summer preparing for winter. Chopping wood, making repairs around the house… because winter came early and stayed late and a few months of summer were all we had to prepare ourselves for it. You certainly didn’t want to find yourself without enough wood for the stove come January and February!

My family and I have been excitedly discussing the upcoming year and all the changes that will occur. We’re slated to transfer next summer and I know it will be here before we know it. We’re a family who enjoys adventures and although we will miss Alaska dearly, we’re looking forward to the change the next year will bring. My husband flies C-130s for the Coast Guard and so we’re limited with few options for our next transfer. Sacramento and Hawaii are at the top of our list. After 17 years in Alaska, we’re ready for some warmer climates.

Jake and I leave Tuesday for Oahu. We’re going to check it out and see where we should rank it on our dream sheet. The kids are staying behind. One week… just Jake and I… in Hawaii. I can hardly wait.

(I’ll also be teaching a Day With Amy Photography Workshop while I’m there! There are two seats left if anyone is interested!!)

With all the talk of our move next year, and knowing how quickly the time will fly until it’s time to leave, I’ve been thinking a lot about Simply b and what my plans are.

As a homeschooling mom to our three sons, the school year is a busy time. You know what it’s like… school, boy scouts, swim team, Jr. Rifle Association, book clubs, youth groups… I’m getting tired just thinking about it, and that’s just for the kids!

My Simply b schedule is going to be whittled down to bare bones in order to spend more time with my family this winter. I suppose this is a juggling act all moms go through. Priorities and all that. I’ll continue the projects I’ve started and I will certainly continue writing the tips and tricks tutorials, but my shooting schedule will be very limited, newborns and children only (and even those on a very limited basis). I hope you won’t mind if I need to refer you to another photographer. Also the October 15th (Kodiak) and October 22nd (Wasilla) workshops will be the last for this year.

This brings me to some exciting news… I’ve got one last project that I’m very excited about before I begin my leave of absence.

The Day With Amy PRO on October 27th, 28th, and 29th.

I know there are some very talented people out there who are looking for a little more knowledge to help them on their way in photography.  I want to help. If there is one thing I’ve learned the last year, it’s that teaching is something I love to do.

This workshop will cover all the information you need to start (or enhance) your own photography business. It is recommended that you have attended a session of The Day With Amy Photography Workshop and/or know how to use your camera in manual mode.

It’s going to be two and a half days of intense teaching and training. We’ll start Thursday evening with a discussion on the business side of things. Marketing, blogging, social networking, as well as paperwork and organization. I’ll share how I got started and answer any questions you may have about running a photography business. Courtney Kirkland will also be talking with us! She’s a talented photographer, web designer and graphic artist. I’m so excited that she will be joining us to share some of her knowledge with us.

Friday we’ll spend shooting. We’ll study both studio and outdoor natural light. I’ll show you around my studio and how I’ve set things up as well as instruct you on how to use studio lighting. We’ll have a couple young models come so that you can practice what you are learning. We’ll talk about posing and you’ll get a chance to watch what I do during a session. Weather permitting we’ll do an outdoor shoot as well! We’ll talk about posing as well as metering and lighting. Because no amount of post-processing can help you if your image isn’t good to begin with.

Saturday we talk about post-processing. I use both Lightroom and Photoshop CS4. You can bring your laptop (I’ll also have space for you to bring your desktop if you don’t have a laptop) and we’ll work on processing images together. If you don’t already have a Photoshop CS program, I recommend that you download the 30 day free trial before the workshop. We’ll start at the beginning and work our way through Photoshop. I’ll cover how to smooth skin, take away blemishes, lighten images, bring out color, and many other other steps I use in my post-processing.

The workshop will be limited to only six attendees and it will be offered only once in Kodiak. The cost is $950 per person and registration will begin August 10th at 7pm AST on a first come, first serve basis.

I look forward to hearing from you if you are interested! You can email me at amy@simplybphotos.com.

If you would prefer to do one on one mentoring, please contact me for more information.

Rhae Anne Etheredge - I’m very interested. I was currently trying to plan for a mentoring sesssion in San Diego with Acres of Hope Photography. This one is more expensive, yet longer. Can you recommend places to stay for cheap?

Erin Cross - I am also interested but would like more info about associated travel costs – can search flights easily but know nothing about accommodations, transport, etc on Kodiak.

Amy Earle | Simply b Photos - Rhae Anne and Erin, I’m considering doing something similar in Anchorage for just a handful of people… let me look into it a little more and I’ll let you know!

Rhae Anne Etheredge - I’m totally in if it’s in Anchorage or Palmer and after September!!
