Baking | Project.12

Each month I fall more and more in love with Project.12. Too often as photographers and moms, we get busy and forget to take the time to tell our story. Our children’s story. Our family’s story. Our moments. Our history. If we don’t tell it, who will?

At each photography workshops I teach, I spend time encouraging and sharing with others how to capture the moments that will tell their family’s story. I’m thrilled that Tammy Smith Photography and I are teaming up for an exciting new project that we’ll announce at the first of the year. It will be for photographers and for moms. For those of us who live a busy life and struggle to find balance. Stay tuned for more details! I can’t wait to share it with you!

This month’s theme for Project.12 is Baking. After spotlighting Jacob in Month. One (Books) and Joshua in Month. Two (Apples), it is time to spotlight Mr. Sam-a-lam, our third son. He just turned 10 in October.

Sam is a cool kid. He’s the best of Jake and I mixed together. He has my ability to plan and Jake’s ability to execute. It’s a marvelous thing to watch Sam in action. Baking was the perfect theme to showcase him. He loves to bake, and he’s really good at it. He makes to-die-for brownies and scrumptious cupcakes. He’s always begging to whip something up. We keep our cupboards stocked with baking goods just for Sam. I told Jake that we need to teach him how to cook (not just bake) so that our counters are not always lined with baked goods.

Sam is good at a lot of things. He’s intrigued by how things work. He’ll take stuff apart and put it back together. He plays the piano and is a Webelos Scout. He’s shy around strangers, but as soon as he gets comfortable, he’ll talk your ear off. I seriously love this kid!

For this project, first he had to decide what to bake. He perused our family cook book (a three ring binder full of our go-to favorites) and considered all manner of recipes including apple pie and pumpkin bread. After all, Thanksgiving is in two days! In the end he decided on cookies. Divine, delectable, delicious, melt in your mouth cookies. Award winning Lemon Crinkle Cookies. (He may have had a little help from me in the choosing the recipe department. We had a ton of lemons that needed to be used;))

Miss B wanted to be a part of the action while I was capturing Sam making cookies. She pretty much wants to be a part of anything that Sam is doing.

If you love lemon, you should absolutely try out these cookies. When you do, consider adding a little more lemon zest and juice to the recipe for extra tartness. (I think we doubled the amount the recipe called for. And you may need to add a little more flour to compensate for the extra lemon juice.) You won’t regret it.

Sam is tough as nails and as tender as lamb. He drives me batty when he’s angry and yet never misses the opportunity to tell me he loves me. I’m a pretty lucky mama.

Make sure you check out my friends who are participating in Project.12!
