I’ve been teaching A Day With Amy Photography Workshops for almost 4 years and I just love it! During that time I’ve taught over 300 people how to use their cameras to capture moments that they love and cherish. One of my favorite things about this workshop is that we have a Facebook group for the alumni where they can share images, ask questions, support and be supported. I adore watching their progress and I’m so proud of all of them! They have put in the hard work and practice that it takes and are now creating breathtaking images! Some use their skills to photograph their children, some photograph friends and family, and others have started businesses!

I’d like to introduce Lori Baskin owner of LB Photography in Columbus, Ohio! She covers the Dayton, Columbus, and Cincinnati areas. Thank you so much for sharing with us today Lori!
Helloa little background on me. I hate writing anything, but here goes … I’ve been married to my awesome husband for 4 1/2 years. Jonah just got out of the U.S. Coast Guard and we are now back in our home state of Ohio. We have 2 little girls, Alessia who turned 3 on October 26 & Juliana who was born October 25 of 2013. Yes only a day differenceAlessia is a 3 yr old going on 17 & favorite movie at the time is Sound of Music. Juliana we can already tell will be a funny/stubborn girl. We also have 2 little yorkie poos, Rooney & Fletcher named after two soccer players. I also run LB Boutique by Lori Baskin where I create Headband Kits for baby showers (wish I had time to do more creations, but love sending the kits to expectant mothers). After our wedding we moved to Kodiak, AK for my husband’s job with the Coast Guard. While in AK we had our 1st daughter Alessia, this is how we met Amy because she took our newborn photos.
How did you get started in photography?
I’ve always loved or maybe had an obsession with photography. I was always the one with the camera and the 20 photo albums. I may have gone through 4 point and shoot cameras in a matter of 2 years because I took them every where and dropped them every where. When we found out we were pregnant my dad got us the Canon Rebel camera knowing I would want to take A LOT of photos of our little lady. A light bulb CAME ON when we were at our newborn shoot with Amy that I wanted to know how to take better photos of everything in manual mode. Lucky for my husband, Amy was teaching a photography couples class. I’m so lucky he took the class because he can step in at anytime to take amazing photos. After that class I just loved Amy’s teaching style and ended up taking the photoshop, Pro, & mentoring classes.
How has taking A Day With Amy: Inclusive and mentoring with Amy helped you?
All of Amy’s classes have helped me strengthen my photography skills by giving me the confidence that I didn’t know I had or that I doubted I had. Amy understands my visual learning style & she knows she will not catch me reading a book on how to take photos in manual or even reading my camera’s manual at that.
You have recently had a baby, how has that shaped how your approach photography?
Well I designed Juliana’s nursery around the thought of taking photos in it through out her life. I have an obsession with crisp white photos. So, I made her nursery just that along with the rest of our house. I had her outfits planned for her newborn, 3, 6, & 9 month photos before she was born. My approach to photography now is capturing special moments that I don’t want to forget, but also to just live in the moment and not to obsess over capturing every moment.
How would you describe your style?
Here are some words that I take from my style that I have formed over the past few years….
crisp, clean, white, SIMPLE….I have falling in love with simple photos that don’t involve a lot of props. To be honest I started off thinking I needed all these different backgrounds with patterns & all of these crazy props (yes I have all of this stuff still in a closet). I want my photos to remain timeless and classic and in order to achieve that LESS IS MORE. I’m very inspired by Amy’s photos & Kristen Cook out of Melbuorne Australia.
What are your photography goals for 2014?
My goal for LB Photography is to continue taking photos that make my clients & yes myself happy. After having Juliana in October I didn’t know if I wanted to keep doing photography, but I had a maternity photo shoot back in Ohio that made me realize I couldn’t give up that easily. I also want to capture as many family memories as possible. I want to do a day in the life of Alessia & Juliana where I capture them from the time they wake up to the time they go to bed. So they can look back on those photos/maybe video.
What equipment your shoot with, what your favorite lens is and if there is any equipment you are drooling over?
I have the Canon Mark ii – I like to think Courtney & I brought Amy over to the Canon side
100mm IS 2.8
Next lens will be the 35mm 1.4
It isn’t equipment, but I would love to learn how to do videos because we fell in love with out video from Juliana’s newborn photo shoot with Amy.
