My Family 2014

I hope you are ready for some picture overload – because boy howdy! Have I got some pictures to share! A few weeks ago we found a spot in the desert here in Alamogordo that was perfect for a family session. The sun was setting behind the mountains and the light was stunning.

My ultimate goal was for Josh to capture a few images of Jake and I. We just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary and I wanted some pictures to prove that we still got it (whatever “it” is?)! Mission accomplished. I love how they turned out. As long as were taking pictures, we might as well get everyone in on the action. Jake captured the images of Betsy and I and we used a tripod for a couple typical family pictures.

I love the way the colors popped against the desert backdrop. I picked up all our clothing at Old Navy. Turns out they carry size “medium tall slim” which is perfect for Josh. If you have a kid who is tall and trim – it’s perfect! Oh – Except for Betsy’s dress. I got that at Gap. Her jacket and boots were from Old Navy though. I was tickled that the red in the boots was exactly the same as the horses in the dress. It’s the little things.:)

This was such a fun evening and afterwards we went out for frozen yogurt. The only thing missing was Jacob. Man – I miss that kid. He’s currently serving a mission for our church in the Czech Republic. He’s been gone 9 months and has 477 days left. We get to Skype with him on Christmas Day and I’m counting down the days. (Just 44 more!)

I was hesitant to do family pictures without him. It just didn’t feel right. But then I realized that this is life. My kids are growing and one by one they’ll be leaving. But life continues. I need to continue to capture the moments as that happens. I’ll be glad I have them.

I love the detail shots from this session. Especially those of Betsy playing with her horses. She is definitely going through a horse phase right now.

*Here’s a tip* When you are capturing your own family images – make sure to look for the details – the ones that tell your story. It’s such a great dimension to otherwise typical pictures!
